The issue of an overwhelming number of options or paths that an algorithm must consider, making computation impractically complex or resource-intensive.

The proliferation problem occurs when an AI system, particularly in areas like search algorithms or decision-making processes, faces an exponential growth in possible states or actions as it scales. This complexity can render traditional computational approaches ineffective, as the resources required to evaluate each option become infeasible. For example, in game theory or combinatorial optimization, the number of possible game states or configurations can grow exponentially with each added element or move, leading to what is known as combinatorial explosion. Addressing this problem often involves heuristic methods, approximation algorithms, or machine learning techniques designed to prioritize the most promising paths or solutions, thus reducing the effective search space.

The concept of the proliferation problem has been recognized since the early days of computer science and artificial intelligence. It became more prominent in the 1960s and 1970s as researchers developed more complex algorithms and encountered significant computational limitations. The issue gained further attention with the advent of advanced AI systems in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Early pioneers in addressing the proliferation problem include Claude Shannon, whose work on information theory laid the groundwork for understanding computational complexity. In AI, researchers such as John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, and Allen Newell contributed significantly to developing methods for managing complex search spaces, including the introduction of heuristic search techniques and problem-solving architectures like the General Problem Solver (GPS).
